Sangenis i Vague
Priorat , Spain
Overview
The estate was founded by Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué in 1978, when they planted vines on the family's land around Porrera. The first bottled vintage was 1995. Maria Sangenís has worked at the winery since 2007, and Roger Simó joined his wife's family estate in 2023. Before that, Roger was manager of the neighbouring Vall Llach winery. The winery's production takes place conveniently on the ground floor of Roger and Maria's house, so visits to the estate are easy to arrange.
Location
The estate's plots are located in the village of Porrera in Priorat. Winemaking and the cellars are right in the centre of the village of Porrera, on Plaça Catalunya. The plots are mainly steep hillside sites, where the soil is the llicorella stone typical of Priorat.
The wines
For its size, Sangenis i Vague has a broad range of wines. The range consists mainly of red wines, but also includes a white made from Grenache Blanc and Macabeo. Most of the reds are blends of Grenache and Carinyana, but there are also single-varietal top wines from both grapes. The estate uses natural stabilisation of the wines in barrel. This makes it possible to obtain a clean wine without separate fining or filtration. Unusually for Priorat, Sangenis i Vague uses a little American oak alongside French barrels.
