Celler Pasanau

General

The Pasanau family has been growing vines in the Priorat region for centuries. Behind the estate's modern winemaking are the family's grandfather Juan Pasanau and his grandson Ricard, who expanded production considerably in the 1980s. Today the estate is run by Jordi Pasanau together with his wife Valerie. Jordi works as a business consultant, but when the conversation turns to wine, something of a Gyro Gearloose or mad professor emerges in him. Jordi wants the Pasanau estate to represent a traditional Priorat family wine business, making quality wines that truly express the region. Today all of their wines are organic.

Location

Celler Pasanau is located on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Montsant mountains, in the village of La Morera de Montsant. At 750 metres above sea level, their vineyards are the highest in Priorat. The estate's mesoclimate ranges from a sunny valley climate at just over 400 metres to the fresh mountain air found at around 700 metres. Their soils are mainly llicorella and gravel.

The wines

Pasanau's wines express the traditional style of Priorat. The reds are full-bodied, tannic and warming, and age well. Pasanau's whites are always interesting and of high quality; they show off Jordi's inventiveness and appetite for experimentation to perfection. Depending on the vintage, the same white can vary a great deal, but quality is never compromised. Pasanau's wines combine excellent quality with a reasonable price in a way that can be hard to find even in Priorat.
