General

Celler Cal Pla is one of the oldest estates in the Priorat region. Its origins date back to the early 19th century, when an extension was built onto the family house and winemaking began. In 1988 the estate was expanded with the purchase and restoration of the Mas d’En Compte estate. Today the estate’s wine production is in the hands of Joan Sangenis Juncosa, who took charge of production in 1996 and moved it in a more modern direction while still respecting tradition. The estate has 20 hectares of vineyards and produces around 70,000 bottles a year.

Location

Cal Pla is located in the village of Porrera. The vineyards lie around the village at altitudes of 350–500 metres.

The wines

Cal Pla grows the carignan, grenache, cabernet sauvignon, picapoll blanc and trepat grape varieties. Joan’s guiding idea is to make elegant wines with a firm structure and the character of Priorat’s soils. The wines are made with respect for the family and for nature.

Traditionally Cal Pla has made red wines, but in the 2000s excellent white wines also began to be produced at Mas d’En Compte.

The whites begin with a short maceration, after which the must is transferred to steel tanks to ferment and then on to French oak barrels to mature. For the reds the maceration is longer, around 30 days, and after fermentation maturation takes place either in concrete tanks or in French or Hungarian oak barrels.
