Castell D'Encus
Costers del Segre , Spain
Overview
Castell d’Encus is a wine estate that realises the vision of its owner Raül Bobet, focusing on wines that bring together his knowledge of wine, science and nature. Raül Bobet is a perfectionist and a passionate advocate of sustainability and campaigner against climate change. He puts his understanding of chemistry to use in pursuit of the highest possible quality, with wines made by the most natural methods possible, drawing on and preserving the region’s biodiversity. Scientific research sits at the heart of everything he does. Thanks to this, all of the wines he makes are used at Disfrutar, named by Michelin as the world’s best restaurant in 2024.
Location
Castell d'Encus lies on the southern edge of the Pyrenees in the Costers del Segre wine region, in the village of Talarn. The main estate building stands at around 1000 metres above sea level, while the vineyards themselves lie between 800 and 1200 metres. The estate’s terroir consists of sandy and clay soils poor in organic matter, which makes winemaking here challenging but rewarding. The large diurnal temperature range allows the production of high-quality wines with good ageing potential.
The wines
The wines of Castell d'Encus are of very high quality, and certain cuvées are genuinely unique and out of the ordinary. Production volumes are small and all grapes are hand-harvested from their own 92 hectares of vineyard. The grapes move into the larger vessels by gravity, and fermentation takes place in steel tanks, foudres and French oak barrels – and for certain wines even in the stone vats carved into the rock on the site by monks in the 12th century. The range includes red wines, white wines, rosé, ancestral-method sparkling wines and a medium-sweet wine. The breadth of the range reflects their ambition to make wines in different styles, yet running through them all is the same style and philosophy.
