Autòcton Celler
Penedès , Spain
Overview
The estate was founded as long ago as 1914 and is today run by Albert Jane. Before running Acustic Celler, Albert wanted to establish his own winery in DO Montsant, named Acustic Celler. Albert then returned with his family to his home village of La Bisbal del Penedès. The estate was founded in the 16th century, but wine was in all likelihood already being made and stored in the area in Roman times. Many finds relating to winemaking dating from the Roman period have been unearthed in the area. The dimensions of the estate's plots and vineyards also follow the Roman centuriation system.
Location
The estate lies fairly close to the Mediterranean, near the Montmell mountains. Its plots are situated at an altitude of around 300–500 m. The estate is conveniently located less than an hour's drive from Barcelona airport.
The wines
Albert has always championed traditional grape varieties such as Sumoll and Malvasia de Sitges. Most of the estate's production is red wine, though there is also room for a few interesting whites. Local varieties have enjoyed renewed interest in recent years and some further plantings have been made. Autocton Cellar has never pulled up its original vines, so they are able to work with old vines – and this can be tasted in the wines.
